CWA Review - March
9th, 2003
By David
First off let me set the tone of
the show. There was probably 100 - 110 people in attendance at
this show and they were QUIET! In general the show was pretty
decent but had its definite down times. This was not one of the
better CWA shows that I have seen, but it did have one of the
better CWA matches I have ever seen. The show started out with
High Times Jin-Hiryu calling out his long time partner (I think
they tagged once maybe twice over the course of 3 months) Jack
Danielz. Jack was sporting a new Lucha mask that was pretty damn
lame, a didn't fit his already fairly unoriginal character. Jin-Hiryu
called Danielz out and they began to fight, the crowd was silent,
they didn't give a shit and it was actually rather uncomfortable
to be out there while it was going on... Soon enough that was
over and the actual show began. The REAL first match of the night
was the best match of the evening BY FAR. This match should not
have been curtain jerking, and was far too short given the performance
by the wrestlers.
Match 1 Sunami (hardcore champ)
Vs. The Loose Cannon
This match began as a straight fist
fight with both competitors roling around in the ring exchanging
blows and eventually rolling to the outside. The true action came
later when Cannon drop kicked Sunami out of the ring and onto
the floor. Cannon then mounted the top rope and frog splashed
sunami to the outside!!! I can't stress how sick this was, I was
right near where they landed, and the thud was audible when he
hit the floor. I was out of my chair marking out like a fiend,
but you could tell the crowd in attendance was stupid they were
those fans that think wrestling is fake and he must have some
way to make that dive not hurt. Anyway some more brawling later
cannon reveals his secret weapon to the crowd, a thumbtack covered
chair (probably a thousand thumbtacks or so) anyway as these things
always go, cannon got booted in the stomach by sunami and took
a nasty shot to the back with the chair. As he was laying on the
ground blood started running down his arm, it was pretty nasty.
Again the I could hear the crowd talking amongst themselves that
the chair was fake and the blood was fake (idiots). Finally cannon
finished the match with a pedigree into a DDT that I think he
calls a Pedidriver... anyway after a really good promo about how
he is the only true hardcore champ in CWA history Dante comes
out of the crowd and challenges Loose Cannon, and after a short
exchange beats cannon with a Pumphandle DDT off the apron through
a table and down to the floor. All in all this was an extremely
exciting match and the only one of the evening where the crowd
was into it the whole way through.
Match 2 Six man/woman tag Big Ugly,
Nikki, & James Choi over larry blackwell, james watkins, &
handsome jack daulton
Halfway decent match that featured
a second rope moonsault from one of the heels who probably weighed
in at about 400 lbs. Other than that the only highlights were
Nikki beating up on the entire heel team (shes pretty damn
good
) After the pinfall Nikki was assaulted and given a
spike piledriver.
Match 3 Brawlin Bo Cooper over Psycho
Seth
Bo Cooper and his manager The Ghetto
Star are freakin tight. From an opening promo that had me in stitches,
to Bo doing Ghetto Stars dance moves on the way to the ring,
these guys are entertaining as hell. Psycho Seth was pretty lackluster,
and came out trying to look very japanese, but when he took off
the bandana covering his mouth, he didnt look the part.
(he may be japanese, I dont know, he just didnt look
the part for his gimmick). This match was short, and essentially
a squash as Bo won with a DVD about five minutes into the match.
This was not the best match of the night, but highly entertaining
due to the antics of Bo and Ghetto Stizar (as Bo called him).
Match 4 Ballards over X Foundation
Once again these four put on a great
show. To start the match the one of the ballards faced off with
joey ryan in a battle on the drums. Joey of course played better
to the cheers of the fans. This match took a little too long,
but featured all the great Ballard spots, and Joeys suplexes.
Despite some wrestling that would be hard to call clean, this
match came in at second best of the night due to how entertaining
all four wrestlers were throughout the match.
Match 5 7 Man gauntlet match for
cruiserweight title
This was one of the ugliest matches
of the night. While there was some decent spots in the match,
as a whole the wrestling was suprisingly choppy and disjointed.
Blaze beat Mr. Cali first, then Kris Kage beat blaze, and eric
matlock, then infernal beat kage, and hook bomberry. Silver tyger
beat infernal, and kid omega beat tyger, setting up the final
two, Jon Jon the Phenomenon and Kid Omega. Omega looked a lot
better at this show than he has in the past, as his moves were
cleaner, crisper, and connected much better than I have seen in
the past. The best outing that I have seen him in, Jon Jon won
the match with consecutive Phenom elbows (think spinarooni into
an elbow drop) and took the recently vacated (about damn time)
title. Definitely not one of the better matches of the night,
but had a few decent moments.
Match 6 Parental Discretion over
Off Da Hook
Again as with the first tag match,
the flaw in this was it was way too long. Neither team looked
capable of putting on a long performance, as after about 5 - 8
minutes the match started to become confused. Parental Discretion
looked fairly decent in this match, and was a pretty good outing
for them. Off Da Hook made up for any lack in entertainment value
with pure energy. All in all an ok match.
Match 7 Billy Blade over Mike Sanders
Thankfully short match. Sanders
is awesome, and billy is decent, but the show had gone on way
too long at this point, and just needed to end and end quickly.
As for the finish Billy won with a superkick
kinda lame
if you ask me, I was hoping for more, maybe a DQ to put sanders
over a bit, but Billy was put over, and it came off seeming kinda
unrealistic to me. Sanders was a good 5 to 6 inches taller than
Billy and much more muscular and athletic, so it seemed a kind
of disproportionate win in my view. After the match Parental discretion,
Bo Cooper and Ghetto Star crashed the ring and beat down on Billy
Blade and the Halloween Barbie. Parental discretion now features
all these men, becoming the top heel faction in CWA. Dante hit
the ring and cleaned house with a brutal brutal chairshot to Wade
E. Dangerouslys head.
In general the show was a resounding OK. If I were to rate it
out of 5 stars I might give it 2 to 2 ½ stars. The hardcore
match was the best of the evening, and the Ballards and X foundation
was the second best. The next CWA show was announced at the end
to be march 21st as the Lompoc Airforce Base. This could be a
pretty good show, show up and make some noise, it makes the show
better for everyone involved.
