My HOF Picks
I have a good feeling that my picks might cause somme questions, but remember that I'm an old fart, so here goes:
1) Jimmy Lennon Sr.
- Jimmy Lennon was the smooth Irish Tenor who graced the halls of the Olympic Auditorium, calling many boxing and wrestling matches throughout SoCal and worldwide. Jimmy Lennon is revered as truly one of the top announcers of all time, and one of the most generous individuals in the industry. He was sorely missed at the time of his passing, yet reached many plateaus in the world of Ring Announcing. As many refer to Gordon Solie as the "Dean of Wrestling Commentators", others agree that Jimmy Lennon was also the "Dean of Ring Announcers".
2) Aileen Eaton
- Mrs. Aileen Eaton was the main SoCal boxing and wrestling promoter from the 50's till 1966 when she handed the promoting duties to her sons Mike and Gene LeBell. She was responsible for many dramatics bouts, and captivated audiences by introducing Closed Circuit TV broadcasts to many local theatres in the SoCal area. She set the standard to what would be the most important time of wrestling in SoCal.
3) The Sheik
- Some do not consider this Detroit legend to be all that groundbreaking in the SoCal area, however as history proves, it was The Sheik who first caused the largest commotion in a grand feud with Classy Freddie Blassie. Their bouts were stiff and blood-soaked, cultivating in a classic Steel Cage Match form the Olympic Auditorium. The Sheik and Blassies traded the Americas Title several times before The Sheik would return to the Detroit area full-time. Their feud would precede Blassie vs. John Tolos and set a new era in hardcore wrestling.
4) Judo Gene LeBell
-Truly one of the most toughest men in sports today. Gathering over 200 Judo Championships, LeBell entered wrestling as a worker for 25 years, almost capturing the NWA World Heavyweight Title in Amarillo, TX, before gettting DQ after the match and having the title returned back to the Champ. Judo Gene would go on to join his brother as a promoter until the Los Angeles market closed their doors in 1982, but would still make one more impact by capturing one half of the Americas Tag Team Titles along with Rick Davison in 1981.
5) John Tolos
- What could be said about the first man to really "tell it like it is!" John Tolos was the man who truly defined what a heel is. Tolos would go one to become a 9-Time Americas Champion, 2-Time Beat the Champ TV Champion, and a 5-Time Americas Tag Team Champion...one of those times even co-holding with Chavo Guerrero. John Tolos was also responsible for participating in one of the most gruesome matches before its time, when he and Freddie Blassie fought in a Roman Gladiator Death Match. Tolos came out and unveiled a 20 foot python that held up the match for almost 15 minutes. Blassie and he would then fight to the finish, his neck with a dog collar wrapped around so that Blassie would not sink his teeth into his carotid. John Tolos would continue to enchant fans with his presence in the old CCW during the mid 80s and would then resurge in the WWF as Curt Hennig's manager during the early 90s. Whether he is "Mr. California" or "The Golden Greek", John Tolos truly is a man whose mold was certainly broken.
6) Lou Thesz
Simply put.....legendary. His track record shall always speak for itself.
7) Jim Londos
- He was the man during the early years in Los Angeles. He was a two-time World Heavyweight Champion in 1934 and 1938, defeating both Bronco Nagurski and Ed "Strangler" Lewis for those championships. The Golden Greek was always known to be a class act around his fellow performers and will always be a legendary figure in this sport.
8) Pedro Morales
- Pedro Morales shall always be known to be the first man to capture the Triple Crown in the WWF. He fought hard during his tenure in Los Angeles, and was always a crowd favorite whenever he arrived for his tour of the SoCal area.
9) Mando Guerrero
- Wrestler, Trainer, Commentator, Mando Guerrero has been part of the success of the SoCal area during the 1970s. He took the reigns of his brother Chavo's feud with Roddy Piper, battling for both the Americas and Americas Tag Team Championship, and would later become a noted trainer for several worthy contenders. He has appeared in several television and movie projects, but most importantly would always be known as one of the original "Los Guerreros".
10) Jesse Hernandez
- Jesse has done it all and then some. As the premier referee in SoCal, Jesse has been called to play by just about every major promotion around the world. Jesse is also responsible for creating the EWF along with Billy Anderson, and have been host to some of the superstars of the WWE in recent years. Jesse has always been known to be a class act, and a man to turn to about the wrestling industry. Nothing but the uttmost of respect shall always go to this leader in the industry, Jesse Hernandez.
