January 10th marks the beginning of a tradition. A tradition that will bring the best talent on the west coast together each and every month, as UPW presents "Monthly Mat Wars." UPW is already known as one of the very best independent promotions in the country, as our Entertainment Overload events at the Galaxy and Grove theaters have shown. As good as these shows are, and because we make them as big as productions as possible, these events don't happen as often as we'd like. So in addition to bringing you these events, we will now be bringing you 12 additional shows a year, UPW "Mat Wars!". Every month at the Raw Training Center UPW will present Mat Wars! with the same high level of competition you have come to expect from UPW Entertainment Overload. And with these shows, we will create a Champion. Not a Heavyweight Champion, a Lightweight Champion, or even a Women's Champion. No, this title will be open to any of our competitors, big, little, male, or female. Anyone with the heart and fire to capture it. A new Champion will be crowned for UPW, but the question remains, who will it be?

8 wrestlers have been drawn for the honor of being crowned the first champion. The 8 competitors, who comprise an excellent mix of established veterans and talented newcomers, are as follows: Lil Nate, Lionheart, Andrew Hellman, Tony Stradlin, Jason Creed, Antonio Mestre, James Lukash, and Erica Porter. Which one of these wrestlers will create a legacy for themselves? We’ll have to wait and see, as UPW Mat Wars presents, CREATION:

Double Main Event:
Mikey Henderson vs. Skulu

Both of these competitors have become top talents for Zero-One in Japan. And now this international match has been brought back home to UPW. This looks to be an even battle between two talented competitors. Both are fan favorites in their own right, and each man is looking to prove who is the best!

Frankie Kazarian vs. The Miz

What can we say about Frankie Kazarian. Not only has he had many good matches for WWE and Zero-One , but he is also has a contract with NWA-TNA and is a main stay in their highly competitive X-division. He has won wrestling titles all over the country and is looking to show why he is "the coolest person in the world." The Miz on the other hand hasn't had the success that Frankie has had.........yet! But don't tell The Miz that, the way he talks you would think he's God's gift to wrestling. He's good and he knows it. Can he stay focused long enough to compete with Frankie? And will Frankie’s winning streak in UPW continue, or will the Miz be the one to end it. Some big time bragging rights will be on the line in this one!

Tag Team Grudge Match:
The Ballards vs. Ruckus and Apocalypse

The last time these two teams faced each other it was at the Galaxy show back in October. The Ballards came away with the victory and Ruckus and Apocalypse are more than a little upset. While Ruckus remains a HUGE force to be reckoned with, Apocalypse has become a star in his own right. He has become a major player in Zero-One, putting fear in both wrestlers and the fans themselves. And as for the Ballards, they are without a doubt are not only the best tag team in UPW history, but also right now the top tag team in all of the independents. Ruckus and Apocalypse are looking to get revenge, while the Ballards are looking to prove that their win was not a fluke and are more than willing to show us what tag team wrestling is all "aboot". Who's the best, we'll have to wait and see!

Savage vs. Ultimate University
Ma'koa and Sabbath vs. Tommy Wilson and Riddick

This is going to be a taste of what’s to come at our Fifth Anniversary Show. Each team here wants to get the first victory and have the momentum on their side going into the Anniversary Show. Can the Rookie of the year and the student of Ken Shamrock topple the mighty Savage? Or will Savage prove that "Size does matter!"

The Crowning of a Champion:
Lil' Nate vs. Andrew Hellman

Without a doubt Lil' Nate has overcome a lot of odds here in UPW. Being only 17 yrs. old and 135 pounds( If you include the afro!), he has shown that its not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog that matters. However Andrew Hellman has a lot to prove as well. Twice Andrew Hellman has defeated everyone in his path, only to come up short in the championship match. He's looking to prove he can win the big one and is looking to make that statement starting with Nate. As the underdog, again, can Lil' Nate prove he belongs, or will it be Andrew Hellmann’s time to shine!

Erica Porter vs. Jason Creed

Erica Porter enters this tournament as the lone female competitor. She says that she doesn't want to labeled only as a "women's champion". She wants to be a "champion". She wants to show that she can beat both men and women and wants to show us that she is overflowing with T&A (Talent & Ability)! However Jason Creed might have something to say about this. Although Creed has less experience than Porter, he has already shown that he definitely has the ability to become a major player. Can Erica Porter prove she has what it takes to go all the way? Or will Jason Creed makes his mark in UPW at the hands of Erica.

Antonio Mestre vs. James Lukash

This match goes back to last October at the Galaxy where Mestre and Lukash teamed up to take on Hardkore Inc. That being Mestre and Lukash's first match together, they came up short and Antonio blamed James for them losing the match. James feels he wasn't at fault and that he was in the ring while Antonio was nowhere to be found. Either way these two have something to settle. Antonio Mestre is a Mixed Martial Arts champion from Brazil, while James Lukash is an excellent wrestler who even overcame a battle with cancer at a young age showing that if you want it bad enough, u can overcome and accomplish anything.!

Lionheart vs. Tony Stradlin

Lionheart has something to prove. With a definite respect for the business he has been a student of wrestling who wants to learn as much as possible. Defeating every university student he has come across he says he is ready for that next step. And that next step will come against Tony Stradlin. Stradlin, who has been an alumnus from the famed Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy, has said that he hasn't gotten the respect he deserves here in UPW. He believes that this tournament is his opportunity to get his "much deserved" respect. This should be a technical match where the first mistake could mean doom for one of these competitors. But who will it be?
